Dunn and Dunn Learning Styles
Dunn and Dunn Learning Styles focus on five main components
that influence individuals capacity to learn:
1.) Environmental—Sound, Light, Temperature and Design
2.) Emotional—Motivation, Persistence, Responsibility and
Structure
3.) Sociological—Learning alone, Presence of an Authority
Figure and Variety of Ways
4.) Physical—Perceptual Strengths, Intake, Time of Day and
Mobility
5.) Psychological—Global Versus Analytic, Hemispheric
Preference and Impulsivity Versus Reflectivity
I often find that
emotional elements play a large factor and many times barrier to a patient’s
capability to learn. For example, I had
a patient who was experiencing the recent loss of their spouse and had no will
or motivation to learn about her new diabetes diagnosis and management of it.
Shoua, good job describing the elements of the Dunn and Dunn theory, and applying it to your practice setting. Nice graphic! Nancy
ReplyDeleteHi Shoua, first thank you for being my blog buddy. very nice job describing the Dunn and Dunn theory. I agree that emotion can play a large factor and barrier. I work with the mental health/detox crowd and it is very difficult for someone to admit that they have a mental health issue and then to accept it and work with a professional for help. This holds true for detox patients. admitting to having a 'problem' with drugs or ETOH and then taking personal responsibility for it. Environment plays a factor with verbal assessments too. being comfortable is key to a better discussion. I also make sure that my patients have had something to eat and drink prior to our verbal assessments and also that they are pain free. Nice job. See you in class
